Prostate Cancer
Simply put, prostate cancer is characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. While the enlargement of the prostate doesn't necessarily mean you have prostate cancer, it could very well lead to the occurrence of the disease if the symptoms are not treated right away. However, prostate cancer, on its early stages, doesn't seem to be a major problem at all. In fact, a lot of males ignore it, thinking that it is a disease that would go away on its own.
But that actually is the biggest mistake men could ever make. The first sign of prostate cancer is abnormal urination. Men with prostate problems are hesitant to urinate because of the pain, blood, and difficulty associated with doing so. Apparently, there's some infection in the urinary organ, which includes the bladder. This instance leads to frequent urination during the night and stiffness of the lower back, hips, and thighs. Some men may even feel that even if they are urinating, they can never fully empty their bladder.
Prostate cancer affects older men. This is because unlike other types of cancer, this disease develops slowly and reaches its full blown stages only during the later years of the man's life. Men aged 60 to 65 years old are the ones that normally suffer from this disease. To treat prostate cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery are usually performed by the doctors.
However, new studies show that a certain drug could possibly cure prostate cancer. The maker of the drug is Cleveland BioLabs Inc and they are currently anticipating the results of the clinical trials of Curaxin. They are confident that Curaxin can cure hormone refractory prostate cancer in men.
Curaxin activates the p53 substance and inhibits NF-kappaB, the two elements that are normally deregulated when a person has prostate cancer. Right now, 32 patients were enrolled in the clinical trial, which is also the last phase of the series of tests conducted to determine the efficacy of the drug. If the drug works as expected, then it could just be the best oral treatment for the disease.
However, the drug can only be given to prostate cancer patients in their early stages. For those with malignant cancer, the best way to remove the tumour in the prostate gland is still through surgery. In some cases, radiotherapy must also be performed along with surgery for expedited effects.
Statistic shows that prostate cancer is the type of cancer that is frequently diagnosed in men, more than any other cancer types. About 23% of prostate cancer patients die from the disease. In Canada alone, 350 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer on a weekly basis and 83 of the previously diagnosed patients die from it. This is how serious prostate cancer can be. And so men should be more careful with their health, especially as they reach 50 years of age.
